Malick Kordel, a backup center, intends to put his name in the transfer portal, a person with knowledge of the situation told the Detroit Free Press on condition of anonymity because it isn't official. Kordel met with the coaching staff on Thursday, April 9 and it appears after the meeting he made the decision to enter the portal.
The news broke about an hour after the Wolverines landed a commitment from Tennessee transfer big man J.P. Estrella.
A 7-foot-2, 275-pound freshman, Kordel was a raw prospect when he committed to the Wolverines after he spent the prior season in Germany, where he averaged 11.3 points and 7.9 rebounds in 24.2 minutes per game with the Skyliners Juniors in Frankfurt.
Kordel appeared in 14 games this past season, largely in mop-up time, averaging 1.2 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.1 assists in 4.1 minutes. He shot 57.1% from the floor but made just 1 of 5 free throws.
Kordel, who now joins fellow freshman Winters Grady in the transfer portal, originally committed to U-M over a number of other programs including Butler, Iowa, Xavier and Villanova.
