Mumbai: In a big boost for Mumbai Indians ahead of their IPL 2026 clash against Delhi Capitals on Saturday, New Zealand captain and left-arm spinning all-rounder Mitchell Santner has joined the MI squad in Delhi on Thursday, TOI has learnt. Santner had missed Mumbai Indians’ six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders last Sunday at the Wankhede Stadium.

In Santner’s absence, MI handed a debut to Afghanistan’s young spinner Allah Ghazanfar, who conceded 51 runs without taking a wicket in his four overs against KKR’s aggressive batting lineup.

Santner is now available for selection for Mumbai Indians’ next match against Delhi Capitals, scheduled to be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday afternoon. Regarded as one of the top all-rounders in white-ball cricket, Santner picked up two wickets at an average of 92.50 and an economy rate of 6.60 in eight matches during the 2026 T20 World Cup. He also scored 120 runs at an average of 40.00 and a strike rate of 142.85. The 34-year-old led New Zealand to the final, where they lost to India by 96 runs in Ahmedabad on March 8.

In IPL 2025, Santner took 10 wickets at an average of 31.30 with an economy rate of 7.92 and also scored 40 runs at an average of 20.00 and a strike rate of 121.21 in 13 matches.

However, while Santner has rejoined the squad, there is still no update on Mumbai Indians’ other key overseas player, England all-rounder Will Jacks, who also missed MI’s opening game of IPL 2026.
