The Frenchman, who plans to retire after the 2026 season, has already appeared at four tour-level tournaments during his final year on tour.

So far, he’s played in Auckland, the Australian Open, Acapulco and Indian Wells but skipped the ongoing Miami Open.

Monfils currently holds a 2-4 record for 2026, with wins coming in Acapulco and Indian Wells.

His return to Monte-Carlo brings back memories of one of his best runs. In 2016, Monfils reached the final before falling to Rafael Nadal in straight sets. He also reached the semi-finals there in both 2007 and 2019.

Monfils put together the best stretch of his career in 2016, climbing to a career-high No. 6 in the ATP rankings that year.

His run at the Monte-Carlo Masters was a big part of that rise. Monfils reached the final without dropping a set, beating players like Marcel Granollers and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga along the way.

He ran into Rafael Nadal in the title match. Even though Monfils took a set, he couldn’t keep up with Nadal’s level on clay, falling short of his first Masters title.

Outside of that Monte Carlo run, Monfils has reached two other Masters finals, both in Paris. His first came back in 2009 when he lost to Novak Djokovic.

The following year, he made it back to the final but was defeated by Robin Soderling.

Monfils will have seven more opportunities this season to finally add an ATP Masters 1000 title to his record before retiring at the end of 2026.
