Per Todd Politz, the 54-point win is LSU’s largest margin of victory against an AP Top-25 team ever. The Tigers made a second bit of history, as this was the 16th game this season that LSU has scored at least 100 points, which is now an NCAA single-season record.
There’s about a hundred different places you could start (101 if we’re being precise) but the story of today was Flau’Jae Johnson. The senior and only remaining player from LSU’s 2023 national championship team, played in her final game ever inside the PMAC and left on the highest of high notes: 24 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Johnson’s running mate, Mikaylah Williams, matched her with 24 points and seven rebounds. The Johnson-Williams tandem outscored the entire Texas Tech team.
Texas Tech never stood a chance Sunday afternoon. Freshman ZaKiyah Johnson scored the first basket of the afternoon 19 seconds into the game and that 2-0 deficit was as close as the Red Raiders would get. It was 10-0 before Texas Tech got on the board, and LSU would end up leading by as many as 56 points.
Everybody ate for LSU. Nine players took the court for LSU, and nine players scored a basket. Five total players, including Flau’Jae and Mikaylah, scored double digit points. Kate Koval had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards, Jada Richard scored 10 points and hit the three pointers with less than a minute to go to get LSU over the century mark, and Amiya Joyner gave LSU some juice off the bench with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The name of the game in March is survive and advance, but absolute domination works just as well, too. With today’s 54-point win over Tech, and their 116-58 win over Jacksonville to begin the Tournament, LSU is only the fourth team (men or women) to ever win multiple games in the same tournament by 50 points. The other three times were the UConn women’s 2010, 2015, and 2016 national championship winning teams.
LSU will now head west to Sacramento for the Sweet 16. LSU will play Friday at 6:30 P.M. CT and will play Duke, the #3 seed in the Sacramento 2 Regional. LSU and Duke met in December as part of the SEC/ACC Challenge, and LSU dominated the Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor by a score of 93 to 77. Here’s hoping the Tigers can do it again.
