During the interview, in reference to how his parents, basketball legend Magic Johnson and his wife Cookie, came to terms with his sexuality, Johnson explained that they were black and white in their beliefs, while he pushed against fitting into any box.
“… I came up against a lot of that in my coming-of-age story… I never saw anything wrong with anything that I did, like even when I was a kid, and they were like ‘You can’t wear a skirt,’ and I was like, “Why not?” My inner being was like, “There’s nothing wrong with it, especially if I look cuter than any girl does, like, what’s the problem?”
Many criticised Johnson for this part of the interview, stating that competing with women is unbecoming of him, especially because he is not a woman.
The comment section lit up with criticism, with one commenter saying, “Bless his heart. Money really makes folks delusional. He looks like an NBA player in a dress with an awkward neckline.”
Another said, “Aint nobody checking for EJ like that. EJ act[s] like he’s this big celebrity, sir, your dad is the celebrity.”
A third commenter chimed in, “It’s the condescending attitude towards women and the black community that got me!”
Landon Romano slams EJ Johnson
Influencer Landon Romano has put his two cents into the conversation by posting a video talking about Johnson’s utterances.
“EJ Johnson said he’s the baddest in the room. He’s badder than any female in the room. Well, yes, if the room is empty,” started Romano in his video.
“Listen, EJ, I don’t understand why the LGBTQ community is always trying to be in competition with women. Women are not in competition with us, especially if you’re up there trying to be a woman,” he continued.
“You’re in women’s clothes. You’re in a dress. And that’s cool, express yourself how you want to, but why are you trying to bring down the next b&^#h?” Romano said.
“You’re badder than them? Anybody with two eyes knows that’s not true. I don’t know what land of delusion you reside in, but you best check the mailbox. The brochure says “false advertising. That is not true, that is incorrect, okay? Thank you,” Romano concluded
