WARMINGTON: Shooting at U.S. consulate changes the game in Toronto protesting's future

· Toronto Sun

These gunshots at 5:29 a.m. Tuesday not only woke up downtown Toronto, but were heard all the way to Washington.

During peacetime when someone fires a gun at or toward the American consulate in Toronto, they are shooting at the United States.

When it’s done while the United States is at war, it could become a major diplomatic incident.

Throw in that members of the Iranian-Canadian community who support the fundamentalist Islamic regime were out there protesting on the weekend, and this could end up being a turning point as well as a concern if Americans are safe in Canada.

Like the shootings at Jewish synagogues, a message is being sent. But this is horrifying.

Certainly, this is more than a routine gun call. It’s a potential game changer.

Police are all over this. Forensics are on the scene.

The building has security and is said to have a 24-hour staffing presence. Security cameras on the street are being checked to see if there is footage to offer evidence of who is behind this.

Witnesses say police have so far found four shell casings outside the consulate and have taped off the area.

Several people on scene told police they saw two men get into a white SUV and flee south from the location at University Avenue and Armoury Street.

Shooting related to war in Iran?

“This is completely outrageous,” said Councillor Brad Bradford, adding, “Bullets flying in an indiscriminate way has to stop. The time for condemnation and empty words is over.”

This is a crisis. It will be investigated as a terror event on its own. It will also be probed as something potentially connected to the war in Iran.

It also will open up conversations about how protests continue at that location. This is not just concerning the strained relationship between Canada and President Donald J. Trump’s America, but how protesters have easy access to University Avenue going forward.

The investigation is in its early stages. Police acknowledge they have found evidence of gunshots.

In a tweet, Toronto Police called it a firearm discharge at University Avenue and Queen Street.

But this was no ordinary shooting and no ordinary target.

“Police responded to reports that someone discharged a firearm at the American Consulate” and “evidence of a firearm discharge has been located.”

Shootings not so shocking anymore

The good news is there are “no reports of injuries.” The bad news is how this will be taken by Canada’s neighbour.

This shocking shooting comes on the heels of three synagogues being shot up in similar fashion this past week.

“It feels like this city has become so divided and some have lost the sense of who we are as Torontonians,” said Bradford, who is running for mayor in October. “This isn’t us.”

He knows, however, things have changed here when you see synagogues fired upon and now America’s main footprint in Toronto.

This is Toronto now.
