Stephen-Argyle boys basketball making milestone celebrations a common routine

Feb. 27—GRAND FORKS — The Stephen-Argyle boys basketball program's stock of game balls is a little lighter this week.

For the last three games, the Storm have honored a new member of the 1,000 career point club, calling a timeout and handing each player a game ball.

A fourth player entered Friday night's game against Littlefork-Big Falls 15 points shy of 1,000, presenting a possibility of four straight games with a new player — all seniors — passing the milestone.

"They've all played since sophomore or freshman year," Stephen-Argyle coach Reece Setterholm said. "They've been an unselfish group where they move the ball together and find the open look. They were all so close in the quest for 1,000 — that was the fun part."

After the season, Setterholm said the school has a wall of names to honor 1,000-point scorers.

Caden Pagnac was the first to break 1,000, with a dunk against Mahnomen-Waubun. Shay Setterholm, Reece's son, pulled it off in a win over a strong Red Lake County program. Then, Raydon Woinarowicz did it the next game against Climax-Fisher. Teammate Anders Thompson is the next in the ballpark.

"The nice part is all the coaches we've played against are more than willing to stop the game for a brief moment, so that's nice to have area coaches be nothing but great about it," Setterholm said.

The Storm are currently 20-6, battling for a Top 3 seed in the Minnesota Section 8A boys basketball tournament. Fertile-Beltrami is the likely No. 1 seed in the section bracket.

In Minnesota's state-wide QRF ratings, Section 8A is well-represented. Red Lake County is at No. 6 with a 23-2 record, while Fertile-Beltrami is No. 11 at 22-3, Stephen-Argyle is No. 21 and East Grand Forks Sacred Heart is at No. 23 at 16-9.

Friday's game is the final game of the regular season for the Storm.

The four 1,000-point scorers average between 10.4 points and 12.2 points per game. Thompson, a 6-foot-4 guard, is at 10.4, while Setterholm, a 5-10 guard, is at 10.6, Woinarowicz, a 6-3 guard, is at 11.3 and Pagnac, a 6-5 post, is at 12.2. Pagnac also adds a team-high 10.8 rebounds per game.

Jake Carlson, a 6-foot-11 senior, is averaging 8.0 points.

"One night a kid can go for 20, then the next night another kid is getting it," Setterholm said.
