A native of San Bruno, Dahlen would go on to play quarterback at the NCAA’s highest level for nearby San Jose State.

Although he didn’t play professionally, Dahlen made a lasting mark on the NFL as an executive. He spent 17 years working his way up the ranks in the San Francisco 49ers’ front office from 1979-96.

Dahlen became the Broncos’ director of player personnel in 1996 and their GM three years later. After three years in that role, Dahlen retired in 2003 with more Super Bowl rings than any man in history.

In addition to the titles he won with the Broncos in Super Bowl XXXII and Super Bowl XXXIII, Dahlen also won five Super Bowls with the 49ers.

Dahlen’s teams went 7-0 in the Super Bowl during his career. The seven rings are now tied with Tom Brady for second-most all-time behind only longtime New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

Not a bad career for someone whose NFL career began with a part-time job working with the 49ers on their training camp in 1979 — the first year of the Bill Walsh era.

“I attribute my good fortune to three key elements: Joe Montana, Steve Young and John Elway,” Dahlen told the Los Angeles Times’ Sam Farmer in 2018.
