Boys basketball: Indians hold of late charge by North

During part of the third quarter and even late in the fourth quarter, Milan looked as if a win at North Decatur Tuesday was in the books. The Chargers had other plans.

North made a late charge to cut a 15-point deficit to a 1-possession game, but time ran out for the Chargers as the Indians escaped with the 73-71 victory.
Milan moves to 9-7 on the season. The Chargers fall to 8-12 heading into road games at Jac-Cen-Del Thursday and at Knightstown Friday.
Milan held a 1-point lead after the first quarter. North’s Wyatt Reisman hit a 3-pointer to give North a late 19-18 lead, but Milan’s Grant Langferman scored before the horn to put the Indians on top 20-19 after one quarter.
North held a 39-37 lead late in the second quarter before Milan rallied. After knotting the game at 39-39, Milan’s Benjamin Knowlton completed a traditional three-point play to put Milan on top 42-39 at the half.
North’s offense struggled in the third quarter. The Chargers were limited to six points. Milan poured in 15 points to lead 57-45 heading to the final eight minutes.
The Indians led by 10 points at the 2:33 mark before a bucket by Ethan Clark pushed the lead to 12. Mason Kunz buckets on back-to-back possession made it 70-60 with 1:16 to play. A left-wing 3-pointer by Reisman cut the deficit to seven and North was back in the game.
After a Milan free throw by Micah Norman, Owen Rennekamp hit a pair of free throws with :20.8 on the clock. Henry Kinker drained a left-corner 3-pointer with :07.2 to get the Chargers within three at 71-68.
North was forced to foul and Norman made both free throws on the other end. Rennekamp’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer closed the game as the Indians held on 73-71.
Reisman led North with 22 points. Rennekamp finished with 21 points. Logan O’Dell added nine points followed by Kunz seven, Charlie Parmer four, Matthew Fields three and Kinker three.
Milan’s Norman led all scorers with 30 points. Gabe Riehle added 24 points for the Indians.
Rushville freshman
The Rushville freshman boys’ basketball team concluded the season Saturday by hosting a 3-team round robin tournament.
The Lions took on the Lapel Bulldogs in the first game of the day. Lapel had a commanding 14-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but a late surge by Rushville tied the game at 36-36 inside of the last minute of play.
Lapel was able to answer with a basket late to take the victory 38-36.
Scoring for the young Lions included Joey Aldworth 16, Madden Meek seven, Ellis Herbert five, Tressler Owens two, Finn Schutz two, Carson Ripberger two and Javier Martinez two.
In the final game of the day, Rushville (3-13) took on Indianapolis Shortridge. Shortridge jumped out to a 6-point lead at half. The Lions were unable to battle back as Shortridge won 43-23.
Scoring for Rushville included Joey Aldworth seven, Carson Ripberger seven, Ellis Herbert three, Madden Meek three and Tressler Owens three.
